The American Legion Department of Tennessee

VOLUME XXXVIII, NO. 2                                                                                                                                                                         MAY 1, 2021

FROM THE DESK OF THE DEPARTMENT COMMANDER:  During this year of uncertainty, I wanted to tell you some positive things that have been happening in the Department.  With COVID-19 really stating what we can and cannot do, it has been difficult at best to do the things that make us Legionnaires.  But we overcome, adapt, and find a way.

Membership has been going steady.  We have another goal approaching us and I think we will make it.  80% of our members have paid their 2021 dues.  That’s great, but there is more to do.  During a call to a transferred member to welcome him into the post, it was discovered that the Veteran needed some help.  Thanks to the leadership of Post 257, they were able to obtain a TFA grant for them.  Thanks for going the extra mile.  A new Post is forming in the 10th District to serve the Veterans in the Sommerville, TN area.  Tele-Health portals are being established to serve all veterans in rural areas in Middle Tennessee around the Spencer and Sparta communities.

The 117th Congress has been sworn in and the Legion is already hard at work to ensure bills brought before the Legislators benefit Veterans and their families.  I encourage all of you to sign up for the Grass Roots Action Alerts that let your local legislators know how the Legion supports certain actions in Congress.  Our voice counts.  If interested in serving at your local level, let me know.

Americanism programs are being planned for our youth.  Oratorical contests are being planned at the Divisional and Department level.  Boys State will be a virtual event this year and while that is subpar to an in-person event, at least we are conducting one of the premier programs in the Department.  American Legion Baseball registration is open for teams.  Business is as usual, with certain constraints.

Please, above all, stay safe in these uncertain times.  Our Mid-Winter Conference was cancelled because of COVID.  Let’s protect each other so that we can have a Convention in June.
